Our Story

Kevin Han, 15, joined his school’s competitive debate team in Grade 9. It was an experience that helped him develop his confidence, public speaking skills, and knowledge of local and global issues.

“After learning debate, I felt much more confident expressing my ideas in front of people. I was able to attend competitions from all over the world, meet many other passionate students, and win international awards that strengthened my resume.”

However, he soon realized that not everyone could access this incredible learning experience.

“I found it disappointing that these important skills I was gaining from debate were only accessible to students paying for expensive classes. Only the most privileged students were able to attend tournaments and pursue opportunities to make their voices heard.”

To solve this inequality, Kevin decided to gather a group of students to start Students2Speak — an organization dedicated towards making public speaking and debate more accessible for his community. Students2Speak offers high quality, low-cost classes to students who currently can’t access the training to develop these critical skills.

Teachers routinely connect with students outside of class to provide advice and tournament coaching. Students in the Saturday class mentioned how helpful their teacher’s feedback was for helping them improve, and how they looked forward to seeing the teachers every class.

The teachers are also enjoying their experience, many of whom are currently competitive debaters. “I love working for Students2Speak,” says Sherry Shu, one of the instructors for the summer term. “It’s so rewarding to give back to my community by building the voices of tomorrow.”

Kevin is thrilled by how much his organization has taken off. “I hope that all of the students taking our classes can develop the same love for debate that I have.”
